About Balancing Rock
Balancing Rock is a significant natural landmark located in Girraween National Park, situated near the border of Queensland and New South Wales. This large granite boulder rests on a narrow base, creating a distinct silhouette against the skyline. Access to the site is provided through several walking tracks that wind through diverse vegetation, including eucalypt forests and heathlands. Visitors often combine a trip to this formation with a hike to The Pyramid, which offers steep climbs and panoramic views of the broader Granite Belt landscape.
The area around Girraween provides various facilities for day visitors, including picnic grounds and educational signage regarding the local geology. The granite landscape is characterised by massive tors and balancing stones formed over millions of years through erosion and weathering processes. This destination serves as a focal point for those exploring the southern Darling Downs. The tracks are clearly marked, though some sections involve navigating over exposed rock surfaces that require appropriate footwear and physical preparation for the ascent.
