About Old Windmill Observatory: the Tower Mill
The Old Windmill Observatory, located in the suburb of Spring Hill, remains the oldest surviving building in Queensland. Originally constructed by convict labour in 1828, the structure initially served as a treadmill and windmill for processing grain for the Moreton Bay penal settlement. Over the decades, its function evolved from a milling facility to a signal station, a fire lookout, and an early meteorological observatory. Today, the tower stands as a significant heritage-listed site, representing the early colonial development of Brisbane and the engineering efforts of the nineteenth century.
Situated within the greenery of Wickham Park, the landmark is a short walk from the Roma Street Parkland. Visitors can observe the distinct stone masonry and architectural features that have survived multiple renovations and preservation efforts. While the interior is generally restricted to the public, the exterior provides a clear view of the historical technology used for timekeeping and weather monitoring in the region. The site offers a quiet historical perspective amidst the modern high-rise developments of the surrounding Brisbane central business district.
